Fatality Notice: IHSA has learned of a construction-related fatality in Sudbury involving a construction worker securing a transport trailer load. One workplace fatality is one too many, regardless of the sector, industry, or occupation. Please take a moment to think about those who have died or been injured on the job and re-establish a commitment to the prevention of injuries, illnesses, and fatalities.

The Gil Samson Award

The Man

Gil Samson served as General Manager and Executive Director of the former Construction Safety Association of Ontario (CSAO) for many years. His dedication to accident prevention has encouraged others who have followed suit.

The Award

Inspired by Mr. Samson’s contribution to accident prevention, a donor established a fund to honour Gil Samson and to recognize similar contributions towards accident prevention made by a Labour-Management Health and Safety Committee.

The award is in the form of a suitable plaque or citation to each member of the winning committee. The award is presented each year at IHSA’s Annual General Meeting.

The Gil Samson Award is presented annually to a trade, sector, or regional Labour-Management Health and Safety Committee within IHSA’s Labour-Management Network that has contributed to the advancement of occupational health and safety by virtue of a program, publication, or other accomplishment.

The judging committee, comprised of members of IHSA’s Provincial Labour-Management Health and Safety Committee, reviews the nominations and selects a recipient.

Nominations should be submitted in writing, either on the attached form or by letter, and sent to:
