Working with suspended access equipment

Constructors using a suspended-work platform system on a construction project are required to complete an approved notification form and provide it to the Ministry of Labour. This can be submitted electronically through the Service Ontario website.

Amendments to Regulation 242/16 introduced changes to the Construction Projects Regulation (O. Reg. 213/91) regarding the use of suspended access equipment and suspended work platform systems. These changes came into effect on January 1, 2017 and include training requirements for those who use, install, and inspect suspended work platform systems and boatswain’s (or bosun’s) chairs.

IHSA has developed a new training program for suspended access equipment, and is in the process of developing two more, to help you meet the requirements outlined in the new legislation. The fourth new training program we are working on, while not mandatory, will help employers meet some of their legal responsibilities for planning SAE work:


1. Suspended Access Equipment Users (available now)
2. Suspended Work Platform System Installers (available Spring 2017)
3. Boatswain's Chair (available Fall 2017)
4. Suspended Access Equipment Planners (available Summer 2017)
